IT IS ON A PROMINENT BLUFF THAT OVERLOOKS THE AIRPORT, 90 FEET W OF THE APPROXIMATE CENTER LINE OF THE S-BOUND TRAFFIC LANE OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224. THE DISK IS STAMPED SPORTS 1943. SURFACE, UNDERGROUND, REFERENCE, AND AZIMUTH MARKS ARE BRONZE DISKS SET IN CONCRETE. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS 76.51 FEET N OF THE STATION, 90 FEET W OF THE APPROXIMATE CENTER LINE OF THE S-BOUND TRAFFIC LANE OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224, AND 10 FEET E OF THE E EDGE OF THE AIRPORT. THE DISK IS STAMPED SPORTS NO 1 1943 WITH ARROW POINTING TO STATION. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS 115.11 FEET S OF THE STATION, ABOUT 90 FEET W OF THE APPROXIMATE CENTER LINE OF THE S-BOUND TRAFFIC LANE OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224, AND 10 FEET E OF THE E EDGE OF THE AIRPORT. THE DISK IS STAMPED SPORTS NO 2 1943 WITH ARROW POINTING TO THE STATION. AZIMUTH MARK IS 0.5 MILE N OF THE STATION, 82.5 FEET E OF THE FULMER AVENUE CONCRETE POST MARKER, 22.6 FEET N OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE W-BOUND TRAFFIC LANE OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224, AND 2.4 FEET W OF POWER-TRANSMISSION LINE POLE 31642. THE DISK IS STAMPED SPORTS 1943. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE STATION, GO N ON U.S. HIGHWAY 224 AND STATE HIGHWAY 241 FOR 0.5 MILE TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF MAIN AND MARKET STREETS IN THE CITY OF AKRON, GO E ON MARKET STREET (STATE HIGHWAYS 241 AND 8) FOR 3.3 MILES, THENCE S ON STATE HIGHWAY 241 FOR 1.3 MILES TO THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE IN FRONT OF THE AIR DEPOT AND JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224, FROM HERE GO E ON HIGHWAY 224 FOR 0.8 MILE TO THE SUMMIT OF THE HILL AND STATION ON THE RIGHT. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK - 14 METERS. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1951 (LWS) THE STATION, AZIMUTH MARK AND REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 WAS DESTROYED AND A NEW REFERENCE MARK NO. 3 WAS ESTABLISHED AT THIS TIME BY THIS PARTY. FOLLOWING IS A NEW AND COMPLETE DESCRIPTION. THE STATION IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTHEAST SECTION OF AKRON ABOUT 0.5 MILE NORTHEAST OF THE GOODYEAR HANGAR AND ABOUT HALFWAY BETWEEN THE AKRON RUBBER BOWL AND DERBY DOWNS (SOAP BOX RACE TRACK) ON THE WEST SIDE OF STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241. IT IS 77 FEET WEST OF THE WEST CURBING OF STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241. THE MARK PROJECTS ABOUT 4 INCHES AND THE DISK STAMPED SPORTS 1943. (NOTES 1A AND 7A) REFERENCE MARK NO 2 IS 115.11 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE STATION, 85 FEET WEST OF THE WEST CURBING OF STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241 AND 7 FEET EAST OF SHARP DROP OFF. THE MARK PROJECTS ABOUT 2 INCHES AND THE DISK STAMPED SPORTS NO 2 1943. (NOTE 11A) REFERENCE MARK NO 3 IS 78.73 FEET EAST OF THE STATION, 1 FOOT WEST OF THE WEST CURBING OF STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241. THE MARK IS SET FLUSH WITH THE GROUND SURFACE AND THE DISK STAMPED SPORTS NO 3 1943. (NOTE 11A) THE AZIMUTH MARK IS ABOUT 0.5 MILE AIRLINE NORTH OF THE STATION, 2 FEET NORTH OF NORTH CURBING OF STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241 AND 2 FEET WEST OF TELEPHONE POLE. THE MARK PROJECTS ABOUT 2 INCHES AND THE DISK STAMPED SPORTS 1943. (NOTE 16A) TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY NO. 224 AND STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241 IN THE SOUTHEAST EDGE OF AKRON, GO NORTH ON STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241 FOR 0.7 MILE TO THE STATION ON THE WEST SIDE AS DESCRIBED. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE STATION, GO NORTH ON STATE HIGHWAY NO. 241 FOR 0.5 MILE TO TRAFFIC CIRCLE, BEAR LEFT AND CONTINUE WEST FOR 0.1 MILE TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT AS DESCRIBED. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK - 30 METERS. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1962 (VES) THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS 2 AND 3 WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1963 (VBM) THE STATION, REFERENCE MARKS 2, 3 AND THE AZIMUTH MARK WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DISTANCE TO REFERENCE MARK 2 WAS FOUND TO BE .07 FOOT SHORTER THAN PREVIOUSLY MEASURED. THE DISTANCE TO REFERENCE MARK 3 WAS FOUND TO BE .02 FOOT SHORTER THAN PREVIOUSLY MEASURED. THE DIRECTION TO REFERENCE MARK 2 CHECKED. THE DIRECTION TO REFERENCE MARK 3 CHECKED. THE DIRECTION TO THE AZIMUTH MARK DID NOT CHECK BY 7.8 SECONDS. THE DESCRIPTIONS ARE ADEQUATE. RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1964 AT AKRON, ABOUT 0.3 MILE EAST ALONG TRIPLETT BLVD FROM THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING AT THE AKRON AIRPORT, THENCE 0.6 MILE SOUTH ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 241, ABOUT 0.1 MILE NORTHEAST OF THE ENTRANCE TO DERBY DOWNS (SOAP BOX DERBY), ON THE TOP OF A BLUFF AT THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF AIRPORT, 76.5 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST CURB LINE OF THE SOUTHWEST BOUND LANE OF THE HIGHWAY, 32 FEET EAST OF A 6 INCH MAPLE TREE WITH A BLAZE, 1 FOOT BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE HIGHWAY AND SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE POST PROJECTING 4 INCHES ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE GROUND. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1967 (WMR) STATION, AZIMUTH MARK AND REFERENCE MARKS RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE 1951 RECOVERY NOTE IS GOOD. RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1975 (CLN) THE UNDERGROUND STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARKS 2 AND 3 AND THE AZIMUTH MARK WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE SURFACE STATION MARK WAS FOUND DESTROYED BY GRADING. A NEW SURFACE STATION MARK WAS SET HOLDING THE UNDERGROUND POINT. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS OBSTRUCTED BY TREES AND NO OTHER AZIMUTH OBJECTS WERE VISIBLE FROM WHICH A NEW AZIMUTH MARK COULD BE SET AT THIS TIME. THE DIRECTION BETWEEN THE REFERENCE MARKS CHECKED AS DID THE DISTANCES (1963). A NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS-- THE STATION IS LOCATED ON A PROMINENT BLUFF OVERLOOKING THE AKRON AIRPORT, 44 FEET WEST OF THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF CONTROL TOWER, 46 FEET SOUTH OF A 14 INCH MAPLE TREE, 39 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A 12 INCH MAPLE TREE, 95 FEET NORTHWEST OF A FIRE HYDRANT, 8 FEET SOUTHEAST OF NORTH CORNER OF PAVED PARKING AREA AND 76 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST CURB OF GEORGE WASHINGTON BLVD. (OLD STATE ROUTE 241). THE MONUMENT IS FLUSH AND THE DISK IS STAMPED SPORTS 1943 1975. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS 39 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE PARKING LOT, 45 FEET SOUTHWEST OF A 12 INCH MAPLE TREE, 1 FOOT NORTHEAST OF A METAL WITNESS POST, 9 FEET NORTHEAST OF A 12 INCH MAPLE TREE AND 85 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE CURB. THE MONUMENT PROJECTS 2 INCHES AND THE DISK IS STAMPED SPORTS NO 2 1943. REFERENCE MARK 3 IS 47 FEET SOUTH OF THE SOUTH CORNER OF THE CONTROL TOWER, 1 FOOT NORTHWEST OF THE CURB, 43 FEET SOUTHWEST OF FIRE HYDRANT AND 65 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE CENTERLINE OF DRIVEWAY. THE MONUMENT IS FLUSH AND THE DISK IS STAMPED SPORTS NO 3 1943. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--AT SOUTH EDGE OF AKRON. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 5 FEET. SURFACE MARK DESTROYED. A3. MARK OK. WITNESS POST SET. REF MK NO. 1 PROB DESTROYED. REF MK NO. 2 AND 3 OK. DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--3-1/2 MI S.E. OF DOWNTOWN AKRON. RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1976 (DMF) THE STATION, AZIMUTH MARK, R.M. NO 2 AND R.M. NO 3 WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE PREVIOUS TO REACH IS ADEQUATE WITH THE FOLLOWING ADDITION ON THE PROPERTY ON WHICH THE AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER IS LOCATED. THE STATION MARK HAS EVIDENTLY BEEN RESET AS IT STAMPED SPORTS, 1943, 1976. AIRLINE DISTANCE AND DIRECTION FROM NEAREST TOWN--AT AKRON. RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1977 (JRS) THE STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARK 2 AND 3, AND THE AZIMUTH MARK WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE STATION MARK HAD BEEN RESET IN 1975, HOLDING TO OLD POINT. THE DISTANCE TO THE REFERENCE MARKS COMPARED FAVORABLY WITH THE 1975 DATA. THE DIRECTION BETWEEN REFERENCE MAR 2 AND REFERENCE MARK 3 COMPARED. A G-MAST WAS USED AT THIS STATION, THEREFORE, NO LINES WERE OBSERVED. THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 1.0 MILE SOUTH OF STATE HIGHWAY 526, 0.6 MILE NORTH OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224, 90 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST OF STATE HIGHWAY 241 AND ABOUT HALFWAY BETWEEN THE AKRON RUBBER BOWL AND DERBY DOWNS, ON PROPERTY THAT IS OWNED BY THE CITY OF AKRON. PERMISSION WAS OBTAINED FROM THE CITY ADMINISTRATION OF AKRON, PHONE NUMBER 375-2286 TO REACH FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224 AND 241 IN THE EAST EDGE OF AKRON, GO NORTHERLY ON STATE HIGHWAY 241 FOR 0.65 MILE TO THE STATION ON THE LEFT, ACROSS MEDIAN BY THE AIRPORT CONTROL TOWER. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK CONTINUE AHEAD ON STATE HIGHWAY 241 FOR 0.65 MILE TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT, IN THE CURB. STATION MARKS, STAMPED---SPORTS 1943 1975---, ARE STANDARD DISK THE SURFACE DISK IS SET IN THE TOP OF A 8-INCH CYLINDRICAL CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT IS FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS 90 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST OF CENTER OF STATE HIGHWAY 241, 32 FEET EAST OF A 20-INCH OAK TREE AND 3.5 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE PARKING LOT EDGE. REFERENCE MARK 2, STAMPED---SPORTS NO 2 1943---,IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 2 INCHES. IT IS 97 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST OF CENTER OF STATE HIGHWAY 241, 39 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF A FENCE AND 1.5 FEET NORTHEAST OF A METAL WITNESS POST. REFERENCE MARK 3, STAMPED---SPORTS NO 3 1943---, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 10-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT IS FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS 14 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER OF STATE HIGHWAY 241 AND 4 FEET EAST-SOUTHEAST OF A FENCE. AZIMUTH MARK, STAMPED---SPORTS 1943---,IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT IS FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS 23 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTER OF THE WEST BOUND LANE OF STATE HIGHWAY 241 AND 1.7 FEET EAST OF A METAL WITNENESS POST. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE THE STATION MARK WAS 26.4 METERS. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS NOT VISIBLE, GROUND TO GROUND, FROM THE STATION. DESCRIBED BY J.N. LEONHARDT.
