DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1943 (APR) ABOUT 11.6 MILES BY ROAD S BY E OF AKRON AND 0.8 MILE W OF STATE HIGHWAY 241. THE MARK IS SET ON THE HIGHEST GROUND IN A CULTIVATED FIELD NEAR THE W EDGE OF THE FARM PROPERTY OF JOHN RUMPH. IT IS 0.4 MILE W OF THE FARMHOUSE, ABOUT 125 YARDS E OF THE PROPERTY LINE, 33 FEET S OF AN UNCULTIVATED STRIP OF LAND AT THE BREAK OF THE HILL. THE DISK IS STAMPED RUMPH 1943 AND IS 18 INCHES BELOW THE GROUND. SURFACE, UNDERGROUND, REFERENCE, AND AZIMUTH MARKS ARE BRONZE DISKS SET IN CONCRETE. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS 120.41 FEET ENE OF THE STATION AT THE EAST RIM OF THE HILL. THE DISK IS STAMPED RUMPH NO 1 1943 WITH ARROW POINTING TO STATION. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS 103.41 FEET ENE OF THE STATION NEAR THE W RIM OF THE HILL. THE DISK IS STAMPED RUMPH NO 2 1943 WITH ARROW POINTING TO THE STATION. AZIMUTH MARK IS APPROXIMATELY 0.8 MILE E OF THE STATION, 0.1 MILE N OF A T-ROAD W AT A BLUE SUNOCO SERVICE STATION, 66 FEET SE OF POWER TRANSMISSION LINE POLE GR 392, AND 31.5 FEET E OF THE CENTER LINE OF STATE HIGHWAY 241. THE DISK IS STAMPED RUMPH 1943. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224 AND STATE HIGHWAY 241 IN SE AKRON, GO S ON HIGHWAY 241 FOR 4.45 MILES TO THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE LEFT. CONTINUE S ON HIGHWAY 241 FOR 0.1 MILE TO A DIRT T-ROAD RIGHT JUST BEFORE REACHING A BLUE SUNOCO SERVICE STATION. TURN RIGHT AND FOLLOW THE DIRT ROAD W FOR 0.3 MILE TO THE FARMHOUSE. PASS BETWEEN THE HOUSE AND BARN AND ENTER A FIELD AND FARM ROAD RUNNING W. FOLLOW THIS ROAD FOR 0.4 MILE TO THE HIGHEST GROUND AND STATION. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK - 30 METERS. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1950 (PLB) THE STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED AND ALL MARKS FOUND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION IS CORRECT AND ADEQUATE. THERE ARE NO APPARENT CHANGES AT THIS OCCUPATION. A WITNESS POST WAS SET AT THE STATION MARK. A WITNESS POST WAS SET AT THE AZIMUTH MARK. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1951 (LWS) STATION WAS RECOVERED AS DESCRIBED AND ALL MARKS FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE DISTANCES TO THE REFERENCE MARKS DID NOT CHECK. THE COMBINED 1943 AND 1953 DESCRIPTIONS ARE ADEQUATE. HEIGHT OF LIGHT ABOVE STATION MARK 30 METERS. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1962 (VES) THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE AZIMUTH MARK HAS BEEN DESTROYED IN THE PROCESS OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE AKRON-CANTON THRUWAY. THE DISCRIPTION IS ADEQUATE EXCEPT AS TO REFERENCE TO THE BARN AT THE FARM HOUSE. THE BARN NO LONGER EXISTS. THE DESCRIPTION SHOULD READ- FOLLOW THE FIELD AND FARM ROAD FOR 0.4 MILE TO THE HIGHEST GROUND AND STATION. RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1977 (JRS) THE STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARK 1 AND 2 WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE AZIMUTH MARK WAS SEARCHED FOR AND PRESUMED DESTROYED. THE DIRECTION TO THE REFERENCE MARKS COMPARED FAVORABLY WITH THE 1951 DATA. SHORTER DISTANCES OF 0.019 METER AND 0.045 METER TO REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 RESPECTIVELY WAS NOTED AND VERIFIED AT THIS TIME. A COMPLETE NEW DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 7 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF AKRON, 4-1/2 MILES NORTHWEST OF THE AKRON-CANTON AIRPORT, 1/2 MILE WEST OF INTERSTATE 77. PERMISSION WAS OBTAINED FROM MR. GORDON C. LARSON, FAIRVIEW CORPORATION, 2131 GREENWAY DRIVE, UNIONTOWN, OHIO 44685, PHONE 699-3500. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF INTERSTATE 77 AND STATE HIGHWAY 241 ABOUT 7 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF AKRON, GO SOUTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 241 FOR 0.15 MILE TO A PAVED SIDE ROAD RIGHT BY A SUNOCO SERVICE STATION. TURN RIGHT AND GO WEST FOR 0.1 MILE TO THE END OF PAVEMENT. CONTINUE WEST ON GRAVEL ROAD FOR 0.25 MILE TO A CLEARED AREA. TURN LEFT AND GO WESTERLY ON A TRACK ROAD FOR 0.25 MILE TO A FORK. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTH AND WEST ON A TRACK ROAD FOR 0.2 MILE TO THE HIGHEST POINT AND STATION ON THE RIGHT. STATION MARK, STAMPED---RUMPH 1943---, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH CYLINDRICAL CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT IS 16 INCHES BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS 51 FEET WEST OF A DOUBLE TRUNKED TREE, 42 FEET EAST-NORTHEAST OF THE CENTER OF A TRACK ROAD AND 28 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF A WOODS LINE. THE UNDERGROUND MARK WAS NOT INSPECTED AT THIS TIME. REFERENCE MARK 1, STAMPED---RUMPH NO 1 1943---, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 4 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS 42 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A 8-INCH TREE, 39 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTER OF THE TRACK ROAD, 22 FEET EAST-NORTHEAST OF A SMALL TREE AND 7 FEET WEST-NORTHWEST OF A SMALL WILD CHERRY TREE. REFERENCE MARK 2, STAMPED---RUMPH NO 2 1943---, IS A STANDARD DISK SET IN THE TOP OF A 12-INCH SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT THAT PROJECTS 2 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS 14.5 FEET NORTH OF A DOUBLE TRUNKED TREE AND 10 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER OF THE TRACK ROAD. NO MEASUREMENT BETWEEN REFERENCE MARKS DUE TO THE TERRAIN. NO SUITABLE LOCATION FOR AN AZIMUTH MARK. HEIGHT OF THE LIGHT ABOVE THE STATION WAS 26.6 METERS. DESCRIBED BY J.E.DUNFORD. RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1983 (CLN) THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARK TWO WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. THE AZIMUTH MARK AND REFERENCE MARK ONE WERE SEARCHED FOR BUT NOT FOUND AND BELIEVED DESTROYED. A NEW AZIMUTH MARK ALONG WITH A NEW REFERENCE MARK WERE ESTABLISHED. A SHORTER DISTANCE OF 0.28 FOOT WAS NOTED TO REFERENCE MARK TWO. IT IS BELIEVED THE PREVIOUS MEASUREMENT WAS A SLOPE MEASUREMENT THIS NEW DISTANCE WAS DOUBLE CHECKED IN THE FIELD. THE AZIMUTH TO THE OLD REFERENCE MARK WAS FOUND TO BE WITHIN CLOSE AGREEMENT WITH THE MOST RECENT INFORMATION AVAILABLE. A COMPLETE NEW DESCRIPTION OF THE STATION FOLLOWS. THE STATION IS LOCATED 19 KM (11.75 MI) SOUTH FROM AKRON, 3.5 KM (2.25 MI) NORTH FROM GREENSBURG, 1 KM (0.75 MI) WEST FROM THE STATE HIGHWAY 241 (MASSILLON ROAD) EXIT FOR INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 77 AND ON A HIGH WOODED HILL COVERED WITH SCATTERED JUNK. OWNERSHIP--GREATER OHIO CORPORATION, AKRON, OHIO. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE POST OFFICE AT GREENSBURG, GO NORTH ON STATE HIGHWAY 241 (MASSILLON ROAD) FOR 3.15 KM (1.95 MI) TO A SIDE ROAD LEFT. TURN LEFT AND GO WEST ON BOETTLER ROAD FOR 1.05 KM (0.65 MI) TO THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE RIGHT AND A SIDE ROAD RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTH ON TABS ROAD FOR 0.55 KM (0.35 MI) TO THE STATION ON THE LEFT ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE HILL.
