Description of Location

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1943 (APR) STATION IS LOCATED ON A HIGH HILL ABOUT 100 YARDS E OF BURT AVENUE IN THE CITY OF BARBERTON. IT IS A LARGE SILVER STANDPIPE ABOUT 100 FEET HIGH AND ABOUT 60 FEET IN DIAMETER WITH THE LEGEND BARBERTON WATER WORKS PAINTED IN LARGE BLACK LETTERS ON THE E SIDE OF THE STANDPIPE. THE POINT OBSERVED ON WAS THE LIGHT ON TOP OF THE STANDPIPE. TO REACH FROM JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224 AND STATE HIGHWAY 5 IN BARBERTON, GO NE ON HIGHWAY 5 FOR 0.4 MILE TO TRAFFIC LIGHT, TURN LEFT ON WOOSTER ROAD NORTH AND GO ONE BLOCK TO SUMMIT ROAD. CONTINUE NW ON SUMMIT ROAD FOR 0.5 MILE TO A GRAVELED T-ROAD RIGHT, TURN RIGHT AND GO 0.1 MILE TO A CINDER ROAD RIGHT LEADING TO STANDPIPE. THIS IS AN INTERSECTION STATION. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1951 (LWS) STATION IS LOCATED IN THE NORTH SECTION OF BARBERTON. THE STATION IS A STANDPIPE ABOUT 110 FEET HIGH AND 64 FEET IN DIAMETER, IS PAINTED SILVER AND HAS THE LEGEND BARBERTON WATER WORKS IN LARGE BLACK LETTERS ON THE NORTHEAST SIDE OF THE STANDPIPE. A TRAVERSE CONNECTION WAS MADE FROM TRIANGULATION STATION BARBERTON 2 AND THE DISTANCE FOUND TO BE 41.73 METERS (136.9 FEET). THE POINT TRAVERSED TO AND OBSERVED ON WAS THE CENTER OF THE BASE OF THE STANDPIPE. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE JUNCTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 224 AND STATE HIGHWAY 5, (SPRINGFIELD ROAD, WOOSTER ROAD AND OAKWOOD AVENUE) WHICH IS IN THE NORTH SECTION OF BARBERTON, GO WEST ON OAKWOOD AVENUE FOR 0.2 MILE TO THE INTERSECTION WITH STATE STREET WEST, TURN LEFT ON STATE STREET WEST AND GO 0.1 MILE TO THE INTERSECTION WITH GLENN STREET, TURN RIGHT ON GLENN STREET AND GO 0.15 MILE TO THE INTERSECTION WITH SUMMIT STREET, TURN RIGHT ON SUMMIT STREET AND GO 0.15 MILE TO A DIM GRAVEL ROAD RIGHT, TURN RIGHT ON GRAVEL ROAD AND GO 0.1 MILE TO THE STANDPIPE. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1963 (VBM) THE STATION WAS RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. THE 1951 TRAVERSE DISTANCE TO TRIANGULATION STATION BARBERTON 2 1951, WAS FOUND TO BE .09 METERS SHORTER THAN PREVIOUSLY MEASURED. THE DISTANCE IS 41.64 METERS AND 136.6 FEET. THE DESCRIPTIONS ARE ADEQUATE.
